Parish Council of Niestetal- the community of Niestetal has about 10 600 inhabitants on approximately 22 km2 and is located in the middle of Germany, 10 km north-east of Kassel. Niestetal consists of two districts: Sandershausen and Heiligenrode which were merged into one municipality 40 years ago. Niestetal is located in the valley of Nieste, a creek that flows into the Fulda River in Kassel. There are 2 primary and 1 comprehensive school as well as 4, soon 5 nursery schools. Just over half of the population (about 5500) is employed, including about 4100 in manufacturing.

Currently the community is served by two energy suppliers of electricity and gas, but local politics consider taking the energy grid under their own care. For many years the local authorities have provided sponsorship for the population within water-conserving policy (since 1996) or for the purpose of using solar energy (photovoltaic and solar thermal systems since 2000). Since February 2012 there has been a new support programme for the residents. The programme promotes energy efficiency of newly constructed and old existing buildings as well as solar energy used for water or space heating. For the years 2012 to 2014 575 000 EUR is provided. On the 28th of March 2012 a kick-off event took place for the citizens to implement a climate change concept. It was attended by about 80 people.

Since 2009 Niestetal has been a member of the Hessian Action Alliance "100 communities for climate protection", since 2010 - a member of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions, since 2011 - a partner in scientific applications center "Institute for decentralized energy technologies, non-profit GmbH" in Kassel, and for many years has been also involved in the solar federation league and the nationwide image campaign SolarLokal.
